JavaScript SEO in the era of AI Search
[WTSNewsletter Headline Sponsor: Sitebulb]

Last year Sitebulb published the 'JavaScript SEO 2024 Report,' based on survey data and anonymized Sitebulb data. The report shows that SEO simply didn't feel comfortable:

🫣 Recognising the dependence on JavaScript
🫠 Investigating SEO issues caused by JavaScript, or
😫 Explaining these issues to stakeholders.

These insights directly resulted in a free JavaScript SEO Training course collaboration from Sitebulb, Gray Dot Company, & WTS - a clear need considering 3,000+ SEOs have taken the course!

Knowing LLMs don't render JavaScript, the stakes feel even higher in 2025.

So they're running a survey update now to see what's changed!

You know this team is going to produce something helpful from the results & share their findings with you again - let's rally around this and give them something to work with!

Client-side vs Server-side Rendering: The Hidden 30% SEO Advantage

If I left you wondering about client-side rendering (CSR) after my last column, let me explain.

Client-side rendering (CSR) is when the user's browser loads content after the initial page visit. It’s pretty efficient and budget-friendly; however, as mentioned in my first WTS column, CSR has been reported to reduce SEO performance by as much as 30% compared to server-side rendering (SSR).

SSR pre-renders content on your server, delivering fully-formed pages directly to users, LLMs, and search engines. This approach substantially boosts visibility by ensuring critical content is immediately accessible to crawlers.

The ideal rendering strategy largely depends on your business type and budget. SSR is considerably more expensive than CSR, so a strong internal case for shifting from CSR to SSR should highlight clear, measurable business impacts.

Hybrid rendering solutions are a good option, and generally recommended as a happy medium between SEO and user-friendliness. Rehydration, for example, allows developers initially to deliver lightweight, SEO-friendly HTML for quick indexing and then progressively enhance the user experience through JavaScript interactivity.

Best practice advice is to limit JavaScript to essential interactive elements and defer all non-essential scripts to maintain site performance. It’s crucial to audit regularly using tools like Sitebulb to confirm both initial content availability and the effectiveness of subsequent rehydration.

Ultimately, your rendering method is a strategic business decision.

Thankfully, JavaScript SEO specialists, Tory Gray and Sam Torres, can help you weigh up the pros and cons of rendering options in Sitebulb’s free, on-demand JavaScript SEO training course.

Job Opening - Marketing Executive
[WTSNewsletter Job Sponsor: Women in Tech SEO (hey, that's us!)]

Salary: Β£25,500 (35hrs weekly - exceeds the London living wage pay)
Location: UK-based (remote)

We're hiring for our first full-time Marketing Executive role!

This role is a great entry-level position (no qualifications/degree required).

It's suitable for someone:

  • Passionate about marketing and community
  • Who wants to learn the ropes directly from the Founder and MD
  • Values aligned, who wants to work with a value-led B-Corp social enterprise that has a vision to create and grow a sense of belonging for marginalised folks through community

Check out the role below and please, please, please do not use AI tools to write your application. We want to hear from YOU!

This breaks our hearts to say, as people who required visa sponsorship; but unfortunately, due to the bureaucracy of the Home Office and the ridiculous increase in fees, timelines and salary thresholds, as a small business, we are unable (& cannot afford) to provide visa sponsorship for this role, so the role requires the right to work in the UK.

If you've made it this far, thank YOU!

A reminder that everyone is more than welcome to subscribe.

We want to help amplify all the incredible people of marginalised genders in our industry, so the more people who subscribe, the more we'll achieve that as an industry.

Thanks,
Areej & Erin
